Turning 40 doesn’t mean your health has to decline. But it is a good time to pay closer attention to changes in your body.

Many common health conditions develop gradually, often without obvious symptoms. Recognizing early warning signs can help prevent more serious problems down the road.

Here are five health concerns worth paying attention to after age 40.

1. Unexplained Fatigue

Feeling constantly exhausted isn’t something you should automatically blame on getting older.

Thyroid disorders, anemia, sleep apnea, and other medical conditions can contribute to persistent fatigue. If you’re struggling with low energy despite adequate rest, it’s worth investigating.

2. Changes in Weight or Metabolism

Unexpected weight gain or difficulty maintaining a healthy weight can be frustrating.

Hormonal changes, medications, sleep habits, and metabolic conditions may all play a role. A personalized evaluation can help identify contributing factors and guide effective treatment.

3. High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure often develops without noticeable symptoms, making routine screening especially important.

Left untreated, it increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems. Regular blood pressure checks can help detect concerns early.

4. Hormonal Changes

For women, perimenopause may begin in their 40s and bring changes in sleep, mood, menstrual cycles, and sexual health.

Men may also experience symptoms associated with low testosterone, including reduced libido or decreased energy.

These symptoms deserve a thoughtful evaluation rather than being dismissed as normal aging.

5. Changes in Bowel Habits

Persistent constipation, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, or unexplained changes in bowel habits should never be ignored.

Colorectal cancer screening is recommended beginning at age 45 for most adults at average risk, and earlier for certain individuals with increased risk.

Early detection can make a significant difference.
