Tired of Seeing a Different Specialist for Every Health Problem?
Amber Moss, DO Board Certified Family Physician
When you have several health concerns at the same time, healthcare can start to feel like a full-time job.
Maybe you have PCOS and are also struggling with weight or blood sugar. Maybe you have thyroid or hormone concerns, headaches, fatigue, high blood pressure, diabetes, or medications prescribed by several different providers.
Before long, you may find yourself wondering:
What kind of doctor should I see if I have multiple health problems?
Or:
Is there one doctor who can help me manage all of this?
For many patients, a family medicine physician is a great place to start.
Your Health Isn’t a Collection of Separate Problems
One of the things I love most about family medicine is looking at the whole person.
Hormones can affect weight, mood, energy, and sleep. Blood sugar problems can overlap with PCOS and metabolic health. Medications prescribed for one condition can affect another. And symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, weight changes, or difficulty sleeping may have more than one possible cause.
Looking at each issue separately can sometimes miss the bigger picture.
My goal is to understand how all of the pieces fit together.
What Can a Family Medicine Doctor Manage?
Family medicine physicians are trained to care for patients across many areas of medicine rather than focusing on just one organ system or condition.
At Moss Health in Gillette, Wyoming, I see patients for a wide variety of needs, including:
Primary and preventive care
Diabetes and blood sugar concerns
High blood pressure and cholesterol
PCOS
Women’s health
Menopause and hormone concerns
Weight management
Thyroid concerns
Fatigue and sleep concerns
Headaches
Medication management
Same-day and sick visits
Routine screenings and wellness care
That means you may not need a different appointment with a different doctor for every concern you have.
What If I Have Several Medical Conditions?
This is exactly where having a primary care physician who knows your overall health can be especially valuable.
If you come to me with several concerns, I don’t expect you to decide which symptom belongs to which specialty before you walk through the door.
That’s my job.
We can look at your medical history, symptoms, medications, laboratory results, lifestyle, and health goals together and determine what needs to be addressed.
Sometimes I can evaluate and manage the issue right here in primary care.
Other times, a specialist is absolutely the right choice. When that’s the case, I can help identify what type of specialist you need and continue coordinating your overall care.
The goal isn’t to avoid specialists. It’s to use them when they’re needed while still having one physician who understands the bigger picture.
Can One Doctor Manage PCOS, Diabetes, Weight, and Hormone Concerns?
Often, primary care can play a major role in managing all of these.
These conditions can also overlap.
For example, PCOS may be associated with insulin resistance and metabolic concerns. Weight, blood sugar, reproductive health, medications, and hormones can influence one another.
Rather than treating each concern as though it exists in isolation, I prefer to step back and ask:
What is happening with this patient as a whole?
That approach can be especially helpful for patients who have accumulated multiple diagnoses over the years and feel like no one provider is looking at everything together.
“I Just Want One Doctor Who Knows What’s Going On.”
I hear versions of this from patients all the time.
Patients want someone who knows their history.
They want to be able to bring up more than one concern.
They want a physician who will investigate symptoms instead of automatically assuming they need another specialist.
And when specialty care is necessary, they want someone who can help connect that care back to everything else happening with their health.
That’s one of the reasons I chose family medicine.
